Our Devine Metallics collection officially launched nationwide at Target this month, and with nothing else like it on the market, I've been getting emails left, right and center, asking for a video and some tips on how to use this lustrous, creamy paint. (And just between you and me, I'd take any excuse to play with these beautiful new colors!)

As you might know, I recently had my guest bathroom completely remodeled by Devine Bath. We had painted the room with Devine Fog (a cool, neutral blue-gray color from the Silver Skies collection) which looked incredible — but that was before I could get my hands on those shiny new Devine Metals. Of the three new hand-crafted metallic colors, I chose Devine Sterling because I knew this gorgeous silver would complement the bold statement of the tile. (Don't worry, there are more projects to come with the golden Devine Karat and copper Devine Penny!) The results were breathtaking! I had experimented with the metallic colors during the production and testing stage, but this was the first time I had seen them used on a large surface area — I'm in love!
That being said, here are some tips to get the most out of your Devine Metallic DIY experience:
1. Roll it on thick!
Go big or go home, I say. When you see how rich and creamy these elegant new colors are, you'll realize that they were not designed to be used sparingly. For best results, I found that two creamy coats with a nice thick roller pad worked best.
2. Roll in one direction
Think of it like velvet, you rub it one way and it looks dark, rub it the other way and looks light. If you roll this paint up and down across your wall, you will end up with slightly darker and lighter patches. I found that long, thick strokes in an upwards direction kept everything consistent and beautiful.
3. Faux-finishing is back!
After the second coat had completely dried, I went back with a cheese cloth and touched up any dark spots by lightly rubbing and dabbing evenly with paint. I was going for a nice, clean look, but a faux-finish technique (such as a sponge or oil-rubbed look) would look incredible with this paint.
4. Have fun!
I love painting with Devine Color — it is rich, creamy and practically odorless. As an artist, my goal is to make painting fun, not a chore. Notice that I didn't need any drop cloths or painter's tape for this project, the paint is so rich that it doesn't drip or spatter! And I was able to use this paint in a confined bathroom with the door closed. No nauseating headaches. Show me another paint that can do that!
